The paint is loaded and quick in the poplars and slows down for the stonework and ironwork, with a clearing sky over the ridge behind. The reverse carries a loose graphite sketch of a building and fence, a nice detail to find on the back of a small panel.

[d]Artist | Unidentified

[d]Signature | Bearing a faded signature in the lower left, illegible

[d]Medium | Oil on board

[d]Subject | Roadside gate and stone piers with poplars and a mountain range beyond

[d]Origin | Continental European, likely French

[d]Age | Early 20th century

[d]Panel Size | 7.5 in. The oil surface is stable on its board. There is a small area of paint loss in the sky at upper left, and a scattering of small specks and spots across the sky and foreground. Fine surface cracking is visible in the sky. The paint is thick in the foliage and road, and that texture is intact. The faded signature in the lower left sits in the road foreground and cannot be read.

The board has a small hole at the upper left corner and another at the lower left corner, each going all the way through the board. They sit at the edge of the painted area, where the board meets the frame. The holes are old and stable, and the board is otherwise sound. The reverse is bare board with the graphite sketch described above and some wear at the edges.

The frame shows the most age. The gilding is worn through to the red ground along the edges and at all four corners, with small chips and nicks along the right side, where there is a longer run of lifted gilding and exposed white ground toward the lower right corner. There are traces of white paint along the rear edges. The frame is sound and holds the panel firmly.

Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.

https://austyn-marie.myshopify.com/products/antique-signed-european-stone-gate-landscape-oil-painting-early-1900s
