antique-longfellow-poetry-book-red-leather-1869
Antique Longfellow Poetry Book Red Leather 1869

Longfellow's Poetical Works came out of Frederick Warne's Chandos Classics series in 1869, the second title in the line, and this copy has been bound in full red morocco well above the standard the series usually wore. The boards carry blind-tooled Aesthetic strapwork with a small panel of gilt flowerheads, the spine is finished with raised bands and gilt floral compartments, and the edges are gilt throughout. The frontispiece portrait is engraved by J. Roskin and Son with a printed facsimile of Longfellow's signature beneath it, a common feature of the Chandos portraits and not a hand autograph. A period gift inscription to a Miss M L Walton, given for her birthday in the 1870s, adds a quiet human trace to the front matter. The feather-pattern marbled endpapers are especially good.

[d]Author | Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
[d]Title | The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, With Illustrations
[d]Publisher | Frederick Warne and Co., London
[d]Date | 1869
[d]Edition | Chandos Classics series, second title in the series
[d]Binding | Full red morocco, raised bands, gilt spine, all edges gilt
[d]Features | Blind-tooled Aesthetic strapwork boards, gilt floral tooling, marbled endpapers, engraved frontispiece portrait with printed facsimile signature
[d]Inscription | Gift inscription to Miss M L Walton, birthday, dated 24th March 187- (final digit illegible), from W A L
[d]Dimensions | 7.5 in H x 5 in W x 1.5 in D
[d]Language | English
[d]Origin | England

[condition]
The leather is bright with light rubbing to the surface and wear along the edges and corners.
