The seat has an open shrinkage split running in from the front edge, stable, along with a bright chip and edge losses at the front rim where the surface has worn or knocked away. The seat top shows the wedged round leg tenons and the back-stave mortise, all sound. The surface has been cleaned and waxed to an even sheen; this is not an untouched original patina. On the underside there are two support battens, one original and oxidized and one a later replacement in fresh wood secured with wire nails. Legs and back are firm and the chair stands solid. Wood species is assessed from surface appearance and grain and is not confirmed.
