antique-english-banded-wood-trinket-box
Antique English Banded Wood Trinket Box

This small box is built entirely from radiating wood segments, glued and turned into a rounded urn shape with a domed, ribbed lid, then set on its own brass pedestal. The form comes straight out of the English tea caddy tradition, originally fitted with a metal liner to keep tea fresh, since removed, leaving clean bare wood inside. It closes with a small brass hasp and works well today as a trinket or keepsake box.

[d]Dimensions | 12.5 in. H x 5 in. These are typical of staved or segmented construction at this age and reflect natural wood movement over time rather than damage from handling. There is a small dark stain on one body segment near the hasp. The finial, hasp, and hinge are all present and functional. The small brass hinge shows a short crack in the wood at one screw point, worth noting since hinge stress is a common failure point on segmented boxes like this. The original metal caddy liner has been removed by the current owner, the interior is now bare wood, showing the same radiating segment pattern as the exterior, with a small turned wood boss at the center of both the lid and body interior. The brass pedestal and foot show old, uncleaned patina with scattered green oxidation on the underside plate and light scratching throughout, consistent with genuine age. No losses to the wood segments and no replaced hardware apparent.
