Pieces like this were made as apprentice masterworks, salesman's samples, or precious small storage for a dressing table, and this one carries the weight and joinery of the real thing in a form you can hold in two hands. It is remarkably heavy for its size.

The solid oak case is dovetailed by hand, the top secured with square pegs, and the drawers cut with irregular hand dovetails that only a joiner working by eye produces. The turned bun feet, cast keyhole escutcheons, and molded drawer fronts all point to serious cabinet work at small scale.

[d]Dimensions | 7.5 in H x 17 in W x 9.5 in D
[d]Primary Wood | Solid oak
[d]Period | Antique
[d]Date | 18th century
[d]Country of Origin | Continental Europe
[d]Style | Baroque serpentine form
[d]Also Known As | miniature commode, table commode, apprentice commode
[d]Construction | Hand-cut dovetails throughout; pegged top; solid oak primary and secondary
[d]Hardware | Cast rococo escutcheons; keyholes decorative, no working locks
[d]Keys | None present
[d]Weight | Substantial for its size

[condition]

Sold as-is, with the photographs governing. This is a small piece of real age and it shows honest wear consistent with roughly two centuries of handling.

The finish is a later surface, cleaned and waxed; the original surface is not intact, so it is not described as original. The top has cupped and shrunk across the grain and carries an open shrinkage split, visible in the photographs, along with old scattered surface marks and small losses at the molded edge. Both drawers show hand-cut dovetails; the upper drawer has an old split running through one side, visible when the drawer is pulled, and both drawers show the shrinkage and minor timber loss expected at this age. There are chips to the corners and molded edges throughout, none structural. The case sides and back show radial shrinkage checks and coarse original tool texture on the secondary surfaces, with genuine oxidation. The turned bun feet are worn but carry the same patina as the case and read as original to the piece. The cast escutcheons are present on both drawers; the keyholes are decorative and there are no working locks. No keys. Small old paint flecks and traces of gilt residue appear on the underside and back, noted for transparency. Small flight holes are present in the secondary wood; this has not been formally treated or tested for active infestation, and I recommend the buyer treat as a precaution.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0896/4623/5926/files/Belgium_FranceInventoryContinued-9994.jpg?v=1785450636
