The canvas has been relined onto a second plain weave canvas over a keyed stretcher, a standard conservation measure that has stabilized the original and left the paint film sound across the lower third and elsewhere. The relining removed the original tacking edges and any labels or colourman marks that would have been on the reverse, which is why the dating rests on style and construction rather than documentation. The gilding is warm and largely intact across the faces.
