The subject is a grand covered urn after the antique, serpent handles coiling dramatically from shoulder to lid, the body enriched with an arcaded frieze, oval medallion cartouche, and gadroon skirt, all rendered in the sanguine crayon manner by engraver Jean-Baptiste Lucien. The technique simulates red chalk drawing through soft-ground etching and stipple roulette work, a refined process associated with the most accomplished tier of French ornament publishing. The Chéreau series was designed as a working reference for architects and craftsmen during the height of Louis XVI Neoclassicism, drawn from antique marble prototypes then being celebrated across Europe following the excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the complete portfolio.

[d]Designer | André-Louis Caillouet (French, active Paris, circa 1778-1817)

[d]Engraver | Jean-Baptiste Lucien (French, circa 1748-1806)

[d]Publisher | Jacques-Francois Chereau, Paris

[d]Series | Premier Cahier de Vases (First Notebook of Vases), Plate 4

[d]Medium | Soft-ground etching with stipple roulette, printed in sanguine, on laid paper

[d]Subject | Covered neoclassical urn with serpent handles, after the antique

[d]Origin | France, Paris

[d]Date | Circa 1778-1782

[d]Style | Louis XVI Neoclassical, French ornament tradition

[d]Frame | Period gilt gesso, carved floral vine molding with running leaf outer border, two-tone gold and dark patina, with period sky-blue mat and gilt fillet border

[d]Framed Size | 14.5 in W x 20.75 in H

[condition]

The print is in good antique condition with age-appropriate toning to the laid paper, visible in the margins and background. The sanguine impression is strong and clear with no fading. There is light foxing and minor surface dirt consistent with age. The paper shows a horizontal crease across the lower third, visible in the full-view photographs. The blue mat is original to the frame and shows minor soiling at the lower left corner where the dealer authentication label is applied. That label, reading "Gravure Garantie du XVIIIe," is attached to the surface of the mat outside the glass. The period gilt gesso frame is in good condition with honest wear including areas of gesso loss at the lower corners and along the outer edge, consistent with age and use. The gilding retains strong color and the carved floral molding is intact. The backing is clean and the wire hanging hardware is modern.

https://austyn-marie.myshopify.com/products/18th-century-french-neoclassical-vase-engraving-caillouet-1778
