Artist Bio:
Thomas Malton was a notable English topographical artist, draftsman, and architectural illustrator. The term “mews” historically referred to stables, especially royal stables. This print shows the Royal Mews at Charing Cross, London—once the official stables for the British monarchy before the facilities moved to Buckingham Palace.
In this print, the Mews is shown in its prime: elegant classical architecture, with richly ornamented columns and royal coats of arms, bustling with horses and attendants. The spire in the background likely belongs to St Martin-in-the-Fields, a prominent London church that still stands today.
